(Telecomworldwire Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Telstra, an Australian telecomms company, has launched a new mobile broadband gateway device developed in partnership with Netcomm Limited, an Australian data communications technology company and Sierra Wireless (NASDAQ: SWIR) (TSX: SW), a 3G embedded module manufacturer.

The device, to be marketed as both the Telstra Turbo 7 Series Wireless Gateway for business customers and the BigPond 7.2 Wireless Broadband Home Network Gateway, combines mobile 3G broadband access with a Wi-Fi Gateway and Enthernet connectivity. The device will work with Telstra's Next G mobile broadband network.

Netcomm and Telstra signed a Product Supply Agreement in May 2008 for the provision of broadband routers, building on an ongoing relationship between the two companies.

The gateway is being offered as an alternative or a backup to fixed line broadband. The Sierra Wireless 3G module embedded in the device is the same module used across Telstra's 7 series range. The device offers features such as WPA data encryption, SPI Firewall and VPN pass through.

Business customers can purchase the Telstra Turbo 7 Series Wireless Gateway for Telstra Mobile Business for AUS529. Availability and pricing of the BigPond 7.2 Wireless Broadband Home Network Gateway for non-business customers is to be announced soon.
