A major outdoor cinema festival is held annually in Sydney and is attended by tens of thousands of people throughout its duration. The central parkland venue provides a beautiful and dramatic backdrop to the films but creates logistical challenges in terms of ticketing and financial transactions. Although ADSL connectivity is available, the sheer size of the event and its revenue means that any failure of the connection would prove disastrous.

Since ticketing and payment for the nightly sessions is handled through an online booking system, the organisers were concerned at their exposure to potential revenue loss and customer dissatisfaction in the event of ADSL communications failure between venue terminals and the organisation’s host server. No tickets could be sold during such an outage.

The solution was to install an alternative communications link from the ticketing terminals via a 3G network. This was achieved cost-effectively through connecting a NetComm 3G wireless router.

By monitoring the ADSL connection the router could automatically switch data traffic to a 3G network if the primary link was lost. This would continue until such time as the ADSL connection was restored.

The use of the NetComm 3G wireless router provided the event organisers with a high quality and economic disaster recovery solution. The equipment could be re-used at subsequent festivals and presented few additional installation requirements.
